Crown and bridgework is also referred to as restorative dentistry. They both involve restoring natural teeth that have been damaged, lost, or decayed. If you have missing teeth, bite dysfunction or structural or functional problems, dental crowns or bridges can be used to give you back healthy function. The goal is a healthy mouth that will last a lifetime. Now that is something to smile about.
A crown can be used to restore and strengthen one tooth that has been damaged or decayed, while a bridge can be used to replace one or more missing teeth. Both of these restorations are bonded or cemented to your existing teeth so they cannot be removed like other appliances or partial dentures. They are a permanent replacement and often patients do not remember which teeth have crowns on them.
Bridges
If you are missing one or more teeth, the teeth around the gap can drift out of position, causing you bite problems. If your teeth have drifted into unnatural positions, they can cause additional dental problems like the loss of more teeth, gum disease, and decay.
A major cause of headaches and neck pain are problems stemming from an improper bite.
To correct the gap caused by a missing tooth and prevent other teeth from drifting into other positions, we may recommend that a dental bridge be placed. A dental bridge is a combination of two tooth crowns and one or more pontics, or natural looking replacement teeth. Dr. Ira Shapira, Dr. Mark Amidei, and the expert team at Delany Dental Care know that a beautiful natural cosmetic bridge can last for years or even a lifetime with proper care.
How is a dental bridge constructed?
Bridgework begins by shaping the teeth on either side of the gap so that an abutment crown can be placed on the tooth. The custom crowns are created for your teeth with the pontic attached to the crowns and the bridge is cemented, in most cases, as a single piece. It usually takes about one to three weeks for the permanent dental bridge to be created. In that time, you will be fitted with a provisional dental bridge that will be removed when the permanent one is bonded or cemented into place. This provisional bridge is used as a guide so the patient can try out how the bridge feels and make adjustments prior to delivery.
After the permanent dental bridge is bonded into place, you can resume enjoying life and foods without worrying about any gaps. A dental bridge will not only provide you with the function you need from your teeth, but it will give you a refreshed, full smile.
Tooth Crowns
Single tooth crowns are placed over the top of your tooth to increase its strength and durability. If your tooth is damaged, decayed, has an outdated filling, or is fractured, a dental crown can be used to restore its look and function.
Single tooth crowns are created with porcelain, ceramic and porcelain fused to metal, and precious metals, like gold and platinum alloys. Dr. Shapira and Dr. Amidei only use precious metals for their crowns . They never use metals with nickel or beryllium in their patients. The majority of crowns made across the country are not made from the precious materials used by the dentists at Delany Dental Care.
Many people choose to have porcelain crowns done to replace their older crown work and to correct any recent dental problems because of their lifelike appearance. A single tooth crown will keep your bite aligned and prevent teeth from shifting as a result of a misaligned bite.
Crown Technology
CEREC technology is an exciting new technology that allows you to have your permanent porcelain crown placed in just one visit. This means that you can return your smile to its fully functional quality without a temporary crown or a second visit! Cerec crowns are 100% porcelain or ceramic that is bonded to the tooth and have no metal to change the natural vibrant appearance.
Crowns can be used when a tooth is so decayed or damaged that a filling will not restore the strength of the tooth. Today's porcelain crowns are created to perfectly fit and match the rest of your natural teeth. For many people, the option of having a natural looking crown is very appealing, and they choose to have their older crowns replaced with them. On the other hand, if it is a back tooth receiving the tooth crown, its appearance may not be that big an issue. You can discuss what tooth crown is best for your dental needs with the dentists at Delany Dental Care during your initial tooth crown consultation.
Protect Your Tooth Crown
Your tooth crown protects and strengthens your tooth from the gum line up. However, you must maintain the health of the rest of your tooth with good dental hygiene and regular visits to your dentist. Without proper care, your tooth crown will not last as long as it could, and may need to be replaced.
